TRILOGÍA ANTROPOFÁGICA

Project · 2014–2017

Devour, digest and release: three acts on the work of others.

DESCRIPTION

The Trilogía Antropofágica (Anthropophagic Trilogy) is a stage project in three acts —Permanecer, Resistir and Avasallar— that takes anthropophagy as a way of relating to the work of others. It all began with desire: the desire to be affected by three works by Brazilian artists, Marta Soares’s Vestígios, Marcelo Evelin’s Matadouro and Lia Rodrigues’s Pororoca.

In September 2014 that desire took the form of a laboratory, and a procedure emerged from it: one and the same device, organised as a ritual, repeated three times over three works. The model was the Tupinambá ritual —living with the other, devouring them, withdrawing to digest— and the tradition of Oswald de Andrade’s Anthropophagic Manifesto. Each act repeated the system with variations: watching the devoured work again and again, writing letters to one another, mapping words, exhausting an action, crossing out, keeping diaries. Ways of eating, digesting and letting go.

Act I. Permanecer (2016) invites the audience to stand on a constantly moving platform, in tension with the social and political events of the present. Act II. Resistir (2016) is a practice of resistance to the commodification of desire and the capitalisation of the body, sustained by a collective system of collaboration among performers. Act III. Avasallar (2017) raises a wooden wall with the same boards as Act II, without a single nail.

Created by: Santiago Turenne, Leticia Skrycky and Tamara Cubas. Direction: Tamara Cubas.

In 2026 Tamara Cubas revisited these processes in the essay Eat, Digest, Shit.
